ANDREW AIKEN '83, P'11

I chose to attend Trinity because:
It seemed to be a true liberal arts college, where I felt I could explore a broad range of academic interests and compete athletically.

My fondest Trinity memory:
Weekly American Studies seminar discussions during junior year. I recall two professors and a dozen or so students sitting around an old conference table overlooking the Quad. I remember a heavy workload and you had to come to class totally prepared. The discussions were so lively it was often tough to get a word in. Almost a quarter century later, I remember the excitement and inspiration of those meetings as though it were yesterday.

My favorite Trinity professor:
Jack Chatfield (history). He clearly enjoyed working with young people. I think his general philosophy was "if we can get them to read a lot and then write a lot, over extended periods of time, they'll do just fine." Thanks to Jack, and the countless papers I wrote and he actually read, I've always felt confident in my ability to communicate.

Something I learned at Trinity and never forgot:
That you have to get up when the alarm goes off. It's a really bad idea to be late for an early morning crew practice! Seriously, the importance of perseverance and dedication were cemented for me through many experiences at Trinity.

I remain connected to Trinity by:
The genuine enthusiasm of the Trinity people I've met over the years and the energy I feel from every visit back to campus. What was a beautiful place when I was there is so much more so today. I am also deeply inspired with the astounding success of the recent rowing, football, and squash teams. The achievements of these scholar athletes is simply unprecedented in small college sports.

Most memorable book I read while at Trinity:
"The Education of Henry Adams" by Henry Adams. I still have it - notes and all.

I give to Trinity because:
I hope that I can help others enjoy the Trinity experience. I just love the place.
